Nats Get in the Relocation Race, But Generous Jeffrey's Way Ahead

"Officials in Las Vegas, San Antonio and Portland have had informal discussions with Marlins executives about relocating but have not talked with MLB regarding the Nationals. One thing working in the District's favor is that none of the cities is willing to pay for the full cost of a stadium, as the District agreed to do last year. By luring the Marlins instead, the team would likely be able to convince the team owners to pay for part of the project.

"On the other hand, MLB, which owns the Nationals, so far has been unwilling to contribute heavily to ballpark construction, agreeing to commit $20 million toward the Nationals' stadium only after a tense four-month negotiation over the lease.

"'We are not going to fully publicly finance a stadium,' said Christian Archer, a special assistant to San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger. 'That's not on the table here. Everyone knows what the tab is, and it's substantial.'

"Industry sources said Las Vegas may have the strongest chance oflanding a team because it is one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation and mayor Oscar Goodman is a wild baseball supporter. But financing plans are still under discussion, and support from residents and casino operators has been mixed.

"Portland does have in place a bill, passed in 2003, that would use an estimated $150 million in income taxes from players and team officials toward ballpark construction. But city support for baseball has softened in the last year. New mayor Tom Potter has said baseball should not be a priority, and it is unclear whether governor Ted Kulongoski would support a stadium plan because he is seeking re-election." (WashingtonTimes)

San Antonio Has The Judge's Stadium All Ready...But It's Not Ready For MLB

"Two years ago, a Major League Baseball executive contacted Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff about the possibility of San Antonio as a home for the vagabond Montreal Expos. Team executives spurned an offer of playing a split schedule in minor-league Nelson Wolff Stadium in San Antonio and in Monterrey, Mexico...

"Wolff said he isn't sure if San Antonio is ready to build a stadium and support baseball but thinks that it will be within the next decade....

"With an empty Alamodome, only a 1/8-cent of sales tax left under a state-mandated cap, and hotel occupancy and car rental taxes paying for the Spurs' arena, a new stadium is not likely in the picture, (Mayor Phil) Hardberger and Wolff said." (MySanAntonio.com)

(Courtesy of the Sun-Sentinel, Miami Herald, NBC6, and the AP.)

"'I appreciate the emotion...I appreciate the fact you feel hurt and burned.'"

"'Jeffrey wants [the team] to stay more than all of you.'"

"'We were [considered] the most disappointing team in all of baseball [in 2005]. It's not like we traded the '27 Yankees.'"

"Off stage, Samson said the team has received fewer than 100 refund requests, which the Marlins won't grant."

"'We're definitely negotiating with everybody, and we're trying to get a deal done here.'"

"Samson, in talking about how the team's fan base has grown under Loria's ownership, was roundly booed when he said, 'In 2002, none of you were wearing Marlins stuff.'"

"'Five of the last seven stadium deals were done in cities where the team started to relocate and then didn't. . . . The first thing I said to the mayor of San Antonio is you are not our first choice.'"

"'Our focus is on staying in South Florida, that's our only goal.'"

"When one suggested the Marlins sell the team to Venezuelan media mogul Gustavo Cisneros, Samson said, 'I'm sorry. Do you work for [Miami city manager Joe] Arriola?'"

"'If you're thinking you can have an owner who is super rich, who is all of a sudden going to pour money into the team, I've got a very interesting surprise for you. You had two owners like that and they didn't do it either.'"

"Samson again ruled out building a stadium without a retractable roof to save money."

"One fan blasted Samson for his 'tone of voice,' yelling, 'We're all you've got. Look at how you're talking to us.' Samson responded, 'Look how you're talking to me! That's not how a conversation should go.' The fan then left."

"Asked about ideas to help raise money for a stadium, Samson said local government suggested a ticket surcharge, but the team opposes that. 'We've looked at the legal implications of doing a stock offering,' he added."

"After the session, Samson said, 'It would have been a problem if we had five people here. Apathy is far worse than negativity.'"

More quotes from this interview by Newsday's Ken Davidoff: "My job is to get the community to embrace the team by the way we play....I need guys to step up, and I'm going to let them know. The important thing to me is that they know they're accountable to each other, before anyone else. When a clubhouse runs itself, that's the best clubhouse. I will work on that, quickly...My owner wants to win. They've proven that they can do it. No regrets." (Newsday)

MORE QUOTES: "My thought is if you're going to go young, go all young. They can grow together, learn to rely on each other, be accountable. And the competition is good. The competition for the spots is healthy....A big part of my job is making sure that these guys understand that they belong in the big leagues and they can do it. "Huizenga and Jeffrey Loria -- past and present owners of the Marlins -- probably wonder why deals for a new stadium never gained momentum, especially with an organization that boasts such an impressive track record.

"It's no secret, really. You don't generate good will and civic pride by rolling over. Neither had the clout or the wherewithal to facilitate a deal for a new stadium. But both were pros when it came to cutting their losses with fire sales.

John Brattain Exposes Marlins' and Loria's History and Financials...

...and concludes that "this isn't about the viability of the franchise; this is about padding profits (yes, profits) and making Loria a lot more wealthy without him having to actually work for it.

"Loria has two choices: One, rebuild the fan base remembering that the damage has been done over the course of years and it's going to take an investment of money and time (read: years) to reverse it. Or as option two, he can throw a temper tantrum, blame the consumer and try to find a region that's willing to make him a lot more wealthy.

"Guess which choice he has made? He's told South Florida to go to hell and is whoring himself out to any region willing to whip out the public teat and allow him to nurse until he's gorged. He's said this is his intention repeatedly since 2004.

"And he wonders why folks still stay away? He's shown no loyalty to South Florida. He expects fans to come out regardless of the quality of the team and expects local politicians to place a higher priority on fattening his wallet than providing hurricane relief. And if all that happens, then he'll pledge fealty to the region.

Interesting Yankees Trade Talk From Pete Caldera

"JUAN PIERRE: The Marlins' speedster won't be a free agent until after the '06 season, and he was moderately priced at $3.7 million this year.

"Joe Girardi's club is much more eager to dump the $48 million left on Carlos Delgado's contract over the next three years - a difficult proposition with first basemen Paul Konerko, Jim Thome, Lyle Overbay and Kevin Millar available via trade or free agency.

"Since Gary Sheffield never wanted to leave the Marlins, as he's said many times over, the Yanks could attempt to ship him to Florida for Pierre - as long as they take another big contract in return, or if the Marlins can deal Delgado somewhere else.

"The Yankees could attempt to plug center with Matsui this year, and then sign Pierre as a free agent next year. With 57 steals last year and the ability to track down balls in the gap, Pierre fits what the Yanks are seeking in center." (NorthJersey.com)

HAPPY RECAP: Marlins sweep the Braves, and take a 3-game win streak into April 3rd.

Thank You, DeadSpin...

Random Jabber About Next Year's Schedule

The Marlins play 15 of their first 21 games on the road, which in April may make for chilly times in Philly, New York, Cincinatti and (BRRRRRR!!) Chicago. At least the schedule-makers wised up in one respect - they have Colorado playing in Florida at the end of April, and not the other way around as in this year's snowbound fiasco.

Again with the 2-game series around May 1st? This year's convolution goes like this - after the aforementioned home series with Colorado the Fish play Philly at home for 2, fly immediately up to Washington to play the Nats for 2, then fly immediately back down to Florida to play 3 against the Cardinals.

The Fish' first West-Coast road trip (June 1 -12) gives them an off-day between the Giants and Padres series, but there's no off-day during their 2nd (August 7 - 17), even though after playing the Nationals their next stop the next day is in Arizona.

The Fish have 12 off-days before the All-Star game, and 8 off-days after. They have 3 non-travel days off before the All-Star break and only one after (August 24). For the last 34 days of the season the Marlins have only 2 days off, both of them travel days. Offsetting that somewhat, they play 25 of their last 41 games at home.

Here's more on the 2006 Schedule. (FishStripes)

For Anyone Who's Interested...

...here's today's slate.

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(Sportsline)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

RECRAP: Marlins, Nats, Astros lose. Braves, Phillies, Mets win.

A Thot

My Mets-fan friend, a serious baseball purist (he wants all baseball records from 1988 to today stamped with a 'steriods' asterisk), brought up something to me that's probably already been talked to death, but that I thought had legitimacy.

Right now there are 5 NL teams with win-loss records better than or equal to the San Diego Padres who have little or no chance of making the postseason, while San Diego is pretty close to being a shoe-in.

This is true obviously because the Padres are the leaders in the NL West, which is a supposedly 'weaker' division.

But the fact that San Diego plays the majority of their games against these so-called 'weaker' opponents and still can only muster a .500 record makes their playoff status sound even more like a joke.

Is that right? Is that fair?

It doesn't matter - it's the way baseball is right now. The Powers That Be love the divisional setup, the unbalanced schedules, and the supposedly 'natural' rivalries.

Which means one possible way to let fairness matter will likely never be considered - that is, abandon the divisions, or make all the teams in a league one whole division, and let the 4 teams with the best win-loss records in each league go to the playoffs.

Say, what about the excitement the the Wild Card races? Well, what would the difference be between a race for the Wild Card and a race for Fourth Place? I'll tell you - the race for 4th place would probably be just as exciting, with the sure benefit of having the teams with the best records playing in the postseason.

This may sound like sour grapes, as if baseball should reorganize itself just because of my desire to make the Marlins' misfortunes this year less daunting. But remember, if everything suddenly magically transformed to the way I'm proposing right now, the Fish would still be 3 games out of the playoffs with 7 games to go, which wouldn't really be that much of a help.

And it was my Mets-fan friend who wants this, and the Mets are even farther back.

Bye Bye Ballpark - The Continuing Saga

"'I am not optimistic regarding the future of the ballpark project at the Orange Bowl,' County Manager George Burgess wrote to county commissioners.

"'As currently contemplated, the ballpark project requires substantial public funding and financing and I think we have reached the limits of our ability to contribute in a responsible manner to this project.'...

"Burgess said a previous funding gap of up to $45 million for a 38,000-seat, retractable-roof stadium to open in 2008, could reach $100 million since a stadium could not be ready before 2009....

"The Marlins, Burgess wrote, 'did not seem willing to continue to work to find a way to resolve the issues and are reluctant to further expend money and resources on the project.'

"Marlins executives declined to comment. City of Miami officials have also said they cannot contribute more." (SunSentinel)

Atlanta at Washington - The Nats are the only NL East team that doesn't have a losing record this year against Atlanta (they're 8-8). They just finished splitting a 4-game series (with a doubleheader) August 30 - September 1 at Turner Field, and the Braves swept the Nats there for 3 at the end of July. The last time Atlanta was at RFK (May 30 - June 2) the Braves lost 3 out of 4. Atlanta's won their last 3 games, Washington lost their last 3 (Yeah, Marlins!)
