2011 - The Year of Javier

(FIXED) Vazquez turned down two 2-year offers to sign a one-year deal with the Fish.

This Xmas-season deal is reported to involve Santa's brother, a Mr. No-Trade Claus. (Wow...Jeffrey had never believed in Santa's brother before).

"The Yankees will receive a supplemental pick between the first and second rounds of the 2011 draft as compensation for losing Vazquez".

Javier had a rough 2010. Michael Jong thinks the complete-the-deal physical should be "highly important for the Fish in this case".

Happenings

Both John Buck and Dan Uggla get their new numbers.

Saturday begins a new year of the Marlins Insider radio show.

The Marlins put Caminero and Reed on the 40-man but leave Sinkbeil exposed to the Rule 5.

The Marlins (with a bunch of sponsors) distributed hundreds of turkey feasts to the people of Little Havana.

Some Thots

Bottom line: Loria wants results. People now claim that the Cabrera trade was a bust for the Fish now that Miller and Maybin are gone. Bottom line: Since that December 2007 trade the Marlins have a better win/loss record than the Tigers. The fact that Detroit was finally better than the Marlins (by a game) in 2010 may have been an early suggestion to the front office for some direction shift.

Who knows?...Omar Infante may have been a lost piece of the Detroit trade, just missed by the Marlins as he was traded (for Jacque Jones!) three weeks before Miggy and D-Train were shipped. (He got to the Braves in a trade with Will Ohman - geesh, once and future Marlins were hovering around this guy).

One thing's for sure: when Loria says they're not done doing deals, that's when everything starts to quiet down and nothing begins to happen, for some reason.

Anything Happen Today?

Well, let's see...oh, the Marlins seem to have signed Toronto catcher John Buck to a 3-year deal...

...Oh yeah, and they also have traded Dan Uggla to the Braves for lefty Mike Dunn and infielder Omar Infante.

Other than that, not much.

Getting Burned

The Marlins' flagship radio station is now the Heat's flagship radio station.

Since the Heat felt they were put on a lower level compared to the Dolphins on their last radio station, they exercised their option to move to 790theTicket, where it's a question at what level the Marlins will be placed in this new arrangement.

The Heat's last seven regular-season games smack right into the beginning of the Marlins' new season.

And since the Heat should be a shoo-in for the playoffs, this scheduling conflict will have an open-ended continuity.

Fearless prediction: a solution will be decided sometime within the next six months.

A Loose End

Time to check back on one of my crackpot theories, and see whether those 'predictive streaks' I obsessed on in the early part of the season actually predicted anything.

Back in this post I listed out the 'streak' days of each NL team and how each team did on those days.

The Marlins, Braves, Reds, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Giants and Padres were the only teams that gave unambiguous results in their streak games. Of those 8 teams' streak results, 6 of them pointed towards those teams' eventual win/loss records. The two that didn't were the Padres, whose two losses in their streak games didn't stop them from ending up 18 games over .500 (and almost in the playoffs), and unfortunately the Marlins, whose April 10th predictive streak had lasted since 1996 but came up the wrong way this year.

The streak that continues to fascinate is the one on May 25 with the Dodgers, because it has gone on since 1994 (or 1990 depending on how you look at it), and because on May 25 when the streak predicted a losing year the Dodgers were 5 games above .500 and would eventually get to 12 games over before ultimately ending the year 80-82.

Crunch Time No. 2

The Marlins are 5-7 in Friday home games this year. The 2010 Pirates are 1-10 in Friday away games and have lost their last 7. They are 4-0 in their last 4 Series Game 2's, although 3 of those series were at Pittsburgh.

Malohm's knee is sore, so Daniel McCutchen will be the Pirate's starter. Adalberto Mendez starts for the Fish, and will hopefully get back to earlier form.

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

HISTORIC-HELL: Marlins lose 5-1. The Fish will be under .500 for the year, the Pirates will not break the most-road-losses record, and Chan Ho Park becomes the winningest Asian pitcher in MLB history.

Crunch Time

The Marlins need to win all 4 games against the Pirates to finish with a .500 record. The Pirates, if they lose all 4 games, will break the record for fewest road wins in an 81-road-game season. Pittsburgh has had only one win in each of their last three road trips, and they won two nights ago in St. Louis. This year, in road games played from Thursdays through Sundays, the Pirates have a record of 5-39 (and four of those wins happened before May 16). The Fish won 3-out-of-4 in Pittsburgh on August 16-19.

Starters: The last time Chris Volstad lost was in Pittsburgh on August 16. He has never won against the Pirates, but Zach Duke has never won against the Marlins.

Choices

If you're not in the mood to peruse "anticlimactic" games in a "funereal baseball atmosphere", why not listen to Game 3 of the Southern League Championship between the Jacksonville Suns and the Tennesee Smokies?

Or, for those holding on to faint glimmers of hope, it's tonight's game between the Cubs and Marlins.

The Cubs are 8-15 in first games of road series this year, but they've won 3 of their last 4. After Pinella left the team the Cubs have a record of "14-7 and 9-3 on the road" and are 5-1 on this road trip. Last year in Miami Gardens they won 3 out of 4 games. Former Fish Ryan Dempster starts tonight after making some history of his own, in his last start becoming the 4th Canadian to have achieved 100 MLB wins.

Starting for the Marlins will be the returning fighter Alex Sanabia.

The Marlins are 14-7 in series finales in Some Life Stadium this year, but are 3-7 in Wednesday home games (they won 2 of their last 3 though).

Roy Halladay may make it past six innings tonight. Jorge Sosa will head the conga line of Marlins relievers expected to be summoned.

CRACKED-STAT-OF-THE-NIGHT: In 2010 the Marlins are 11-3 in games played on days of the month ending in the number 1 (the 1st, 11th, 21st and 31st). The Nats are 8-8 on those dates.

Dealing with the pressure are Anibal for the Fish and Jordan Zimmermann for the Nats.

Nats to You

A few minutes before game time, and there's a wall of water coming from the sky about five steps away from the stadium. More rain's possible tonight. The game's being delayed.

The Nats are having a mini-spurt - they've won three from St. Louis in their just-finished four-game series. The last time the Nats played the Fish in Miami they won the first game of the series, then lost the next two.

After playing every game this year, Danny's day-to-day with a groin strain. Hanley's in the line-up. Nunez, for some reason, is still the closer.

Sanabia against Marquis tonight.

Marlins Lead Atlanta 7-0 After 6 Innings

Maybin and Morrison hit homers in the game's first two at-bats. Uggla and Gaby homer too.

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

WOW: The Marlins dominate the Braves 7-1. It's more amazing since this was a first game of a home stand for Atlanta, and this year the Braves were 9-1 in the first games of home stands (the one loss was to that other Florida team on June 15).

Schedule News

This Saturday's game will not start at the originally-scheduled time of 4:10 ET, but at 7:10, and it will be shown on FSFlorida.

Also, the Cardinals will come back to Miami on September 20 to make up that rained-out game.

Mourning Monday

As Cody headed west, the Marlins headed up to New York, to start a string of 21 games against the NL East, with the knowledge as they left that the Front office believes that's the season's over, and now with the undisputed revelation that Loria and Co. has for years been pleading poverty while pocketing piles and piles of profits.

I wonder how the players will react. After winning 5 of their last 6, will they now just go through the motions, or step it up a notch to make some point to themselves, if not to their undeserving, money-grubbing overlords?

Here's Monday's scores...

Cody Goes

The cheap-ass Marlins send Cody Ross to the Giants so he'll be sitting on the bench by the bay. The Marlins did not get anything in return for Cody because, as we all know, Cody is priceless.

Cameron is coming back to once again see if his great minor-league numbers can translate to the majors.

Mystery Meniscus

"Ricky Nolasco has been diagnosed with a torn meniscus in his right knee" (don't tell me someone left another pie lying around)...

"Andrew Miller will move out of the bullpen and fill in for Nolasco on Sunday." (msnbc)

UPDATE: The Marlins may now ban changing shoes. (foxsportsflorida)

Houston We Have a Problem

So far the Paulino Wonder Diet and the Giants' efforts to screw up the Padres hasn't stopped the Marlins winning ways. The supercomputer, though, thinks tonight's game is in the 'Stros favor. This despite the fact that the last time Houston has won a Saturday road game was on April 17 (that's eight losses in a row). The Marlins this year are 5-4 in Super Saturday games.

Volstad against Wandy tonight. And then it's Tito "El Bambino" featuring Zion y Lennox, playing all their classics.

TEMPERED-JOY!: On a rainy night the Marlins get 2 triples in a row and win 6-3.

Catch'em Quick

I wonder if a 3-game home series placed between a 10-game road trip and a 6-game road trip feels, to the players, almost like just another stop in a 19-game travel marathon?

The returning Fish come back to the news that the owners of the stadium are planning a water park to open when the Marlins leave, which is kind of redundant considering the stadium sort of turns into a water park during those evening storms.

The forecast is somewhat drier this weekend. (CORRECTION) The Marlins lost 2-of-3 from the Astros way back on April 20-22. And the Fish are still recovering from the last time they were home. The Astros are coming off a 10-game home stand where they went 6-4. They have won the starting game of their last three road trips.

Anibal against J.A. Happ tonight

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

HOORAY!: It rains anyway, but Anibal was unaffected as he gets his first RBI since 2006, and Cody and Hector homer - Fish win 9-0.
