"'I am not optimistic regarding the future of the ballpark project at the Orange Bowl,' County Manager George Burgess wrote to county commissioners.
"'As currently contemplated, the ballpark project requires substantial public funding and financing and I think we have reached the limits of our ability to contribute in a responsible manner to this project.'...
"Burgess said a previous funding gap of up to $45 million for a 38,000-seat, retractable-roof stadium to open in 2008, could reach $100 million since a stadium could not be ready before 2009....
"The Marlins, Burgess wrote, 'did not seem willing to continue to work to find a way to resolve the issues and are reluctant to further expend money and resources on the project.'
"Marlins executives declined to comment. City of Miami officials have also said they cannot contribute more." (SunSentinel)
