The Other Side of The Bullpen Blues

"The quickest way to cure the Marlins' bullpen? Have the starters reel off four or five games in row of seven or eight innings. Since tossing four scoreless innings in the road trip opening victory against the Mets, the bullpen has allowed at least one run in seven consecutive games while covering 3.6 innings per game on average. That workload will wear down even the most accomplished relief staff.

"The Marlins entered Tuesday's game with the third-most relief innings (198 1/3) in the National League, trailing only the Padres (205) and Gaints (202 1/3). Winning teams generally don't hover among the leaders in that category.

"This bitter stretch has as much to do with the starters not pitching deep enough into games as it does with the relievers underperforming." (SunSentinel)
