Game No. 2

In the second game of road trips the Nationals this year are 3-6, and have lost their last five. In the second game of home stands the Marlins are 4-5, and have won 2 of their last 3.

CRACKED-STAT-OF-THE-NIGHT: In 2010 the Marlins are 11-3 in games played on days of the month ending in the number 1 (the 1st, 11th, 21st and 31st). The Nats are 8-8 on those dates.

Dealing with the pressure are Anibal for the Fish and Jordan Zimmermann for the Nats.

WON: Tracy hits Hanley in from second for the walk-off 1-0 10th inning win.

Nats to You

A few minutes before game time, and there's a wall of water coming from the sky about five steps away from the stadium. More rain's possible tonight. The game's being delayed.

The Nats are having a mini-spurt - they've won three from St. Louis in their just-finished four-game series. The last time the Nats played the Fish in Miami they won the first game of the series, then lost the next two.

After playing every game this year, Danny's day-to-day with a groin strain. Hanley's in the line-up. Nunez, for some reason, is still the closer.

Sanabia against Marquis tonight.

Marlins Lead Atlanta 7-0 After 6 Innings

Maybin and Morrison hit homers in the game's first two at-bats. Uggla and Gaby homer too.

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

WOW: The Marlins dominate the Braves 7-1. It's more amazing since this was a first game of a home stand for Atlanta, and this year the Braves were 9-1 in the first games of home stands (the one loss was to that other Florida team on June 15).

Schedule News

This Saturday's game will not start at the originally-scheduled time of 4:10 ET, but at 7:10, and it will be shown on FSFlorida.

Also, the Cardinals will come back to Miami on September 20 to make up that rained-out game.

Mourning Monday

As Cody headed west, the Marlins headed up to New York, to start a string of 21 games against the NL East, with the knowledge as they left that the Front office believes that's the season's over, and now with the undisputed revelation that Loria and Co. has for years been pleading poverty while pocketing piles and piles of profits.

I wonder how the players will react. After winning 5 of their last 6, will they now just go through the motions, or step it up a notch to make some point to themselves, if not to their undeserving, money-grubbing overlords?

Here's Monday's scores...

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

Cody Goes

The cheap-ass Marlins send Cody Ross to the Giants so he'll be sitting on the bench by the bay. The Marlins did not get anything in return for Cody because, as we all know, Cody is priceless.

Cameron is coming back to once again see if his great minor-league numbers can translate to the majors.

Mystery Meniscus

"Ricky Nolasco has been diagnosed with a torn meniscus in his right knee" (don't tell me someone left another pie lying around)...

"Andrew Miller will move out of the bullpen and fill in for Nolasco on Sunday." (msnbc)

UPDATE: The Marlins may now ban changing shoes. (foxsportsflorida)

Houston We Have a Problem

So far the Paulino Wonder Diet and the Giants' efforts to screw up the Padres hasn't stopped the Marlins winning ways. The supercomputer, though, thinks tonight's game is in the 'Stros favor. This despite the fact that the last time Houston has won a Saturday road game was on April 17 (that's eight losses in a row). The Marlins this year are 5-4 in Super Saturday games.

Volstad against Wandy tonight. And then it's Tito "El Bambino" featuring Zion y Lennox, playing all their classics.

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

TEMPERED-JOY!: On a rainy night the Marlins get 2 triples in a row and win 6-3.

Catch'em Quick

I wonder if a 3-game home series placed between a 10-game road trip and a 6-game road trip feels, to the players, almost like just another stop in a 19-game travel marathon?

The returning Fish come back to the news that the owners of the stadium are planning a water park to open when the Marlins leave, which is kind of redundant considering the stadium sort of turns into a water park during those evening storms.

The forecast is somewhat drier this weekend. (CORRECTION) The Marlins lost 2-of-3 from the Astros way back on April 20-22. And the Fish are still recovering from the last time they were home. The Astros are coming off a 10-game home stand where they went 6-4. They have won the starting game of their last three road trips.

Anibal against J.A. Happ tonight

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

HOORAY!: It rains anyway, but Anibal was unaffected as he gets his first RBI since 2006, and Cody and Hector homer - Fish win 9-0.

Goodbye Pittsburgh

Sanabia against Maholm tonight. "Florida has never won three in a row at PNC Park, and it¹s only won one road series against the Pirates (40-80) since 2002." But the Marlins have won the series finale of all six four-game series they have been in this year. The Pirates are 1-4 this year in the last games of four-game series.

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

7-0: Marlins win 4-2.

Possibilities

Considering the late Bobby Thompson, it may be inspirational in regards to the Marlins to recall that in that season of 1951 the Giants "won 37 of their final 44 games and made up a 13 1/2-game deficit to the Dodgers in the standings".

With 44 games left in the 2010 season, and the Fish 11 1/2 games back, it's Josh Johnson and Ross Ohlendorf on the mound tonight.

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

YES: Fish win 3-2.

Watch Out for the Wounded

The Pirates may have lost twice as many games as they have won this year (39-78), and they may have "dropped seven straight overall and eight of 11 at home", but for the year they are still only 4 games under .500 in PNC Park (26-30), and the Marlins are 1-4 in their last 5 games at PNC.

James McDonald and Chris Volstad's on the mound tonight.

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

OUCH: The Marlins, generous ender of other team's losing streaks, lose their 4th in a row tonight in Pittsburgh.

Beat Off the Brooms

Cincinatti's going for its first three-game home sweep of the year (their only home sweep this year was a two-gamer against Milwaukee in May).

The Marlins lost their last Sunday away game after winning the previous three. Cincinatti won their last Sunday home game after losing the previous three.

Today it's Anibal vs. Cueto's replacement Homer Bailey. Stanton's batting fifth.

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

TRIPLE-UGH: Fish lose 2-0, fall "to 3-14 at Great American Ball Park since 2006" and lose "eight of their last 12 games overall". (Yahoo)

Struggling Starters

Mike Leake and Sean West both had crappy starts last time out and both are hoping to bounce-back.

Stanton's hitting .688 (.737 OBP) with "four home runs, four doubles, three walks and eight RBI" on the road trip but Edwin's not moving him up in the batting order yet. Brett Hayes starts tonight.

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

DOUBLE-UGH: Fish lose 5-4.

Capital Crunchtime

The world will be watching to see if Strasburg will still be Strasburg. But the Marlins will be watching to see if good Anibal shows up.

The Nats have lost their last two games. They have a 29-23 record in D.C. This year the Fish are 1-2 in D.C., but 4-2 against the Nats in Miami. The Marlins are 25-26 on the road. Coghlan's practically out for the year, but Gaby and Cody should be ready.

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

GOOD-ANIBAL: Dan and Hanley put the crunch on Stephen, and Sanchez kept 'em down.

Monday, August 09, 2010

Past Meets Future

The Marlins have a day off today before facing Strasburg in Washington tomorrow. Tonight the Marlins' opponents from last weekend face the Marlins' opponents for this coming weekend in a battle for the NL Central lead.

54 Games to Go

It's the first time this year that the Fish have lost 5 in a row. Can they fight off their funk?. It's Josh against Jake tonight.

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

YES: Danny ties it after another crash-and-burn by Leo, and Hanley knocks in Chad for the walk-off win in 10 innings.

Reinforcements

The Marlins sign Chad Tracy and bring back Brett Hayes (they send Bryan Petersen and Brad Davis to AAA).

Fighting the sweep will be Chris Volstad, while Roy Oswalt hopefully still has troubles.

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

SABOTAGE: Marlins win it in the 9th, but a evil umpiring call allowed the Phillies to win in the 10th.

OH-SORRY: Juan C reminds us the game shouldn't have gone to the bottom of the 9th.

San Diego Sweep?

The amazing Josh Johnson vs. the Marlin-killer Jon Garland today. New Padre Ryan Ludwick seems to have been taken out of the starting lineup.

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

NOPE: Fish fought to the end, but lose 5-4.

Dem's Da Breaks

Evan Reed, the non-injured part of the Jorge Cantu trade, became injured in his first game with the Suns (seriousness of injury unknown at post-time).
