We all know the Marlins are signing Heath Bell, another Padre pitcher who unfortunately is not considered a plus by everybody out there. Now the Fish look like they are about to give over 100 million bucks to Jose Reyes, gaining a fragile superstar shortshop that will allow a shifting of our other fragile superstar shortshop over to third base.

There's no money budgeted to add more mass transit to the new stadium than what's there now, which ain't enough.
Besides the taxes, the city of Miami took another look at the stadium agreement and discovered that they have to pay for stadium maintenance too.
And now more bickering will delay leasing out the garages' retail and restaurant areas.

So has the projected contraption to celebrate home runs, which may get assembled in time for the first pitches, but is planned not to be viewable during off-days, even though it's officially a public work of 'art'.

Happy Changes Vs. Results
Since the start of the 162-game-per-season era in 1961, it seems there has been only one other MLB team that at the same time both officially changed its name and moved to a new ballpark while remaining in the same market. That was the team in Houston, who ended the 1964 season as the Colt 45's playing in Colt Stadium, and began 1965 as the Astros in the Astrodome.
So did those changes create some improvement in the Houston win-loss record from '64 to '65? No. In 1964 the Colt 45s finished the year at 66-96, while the next year the Astros almost matched the previous year with a record of 65-97. But in just the home games, Houston, playing in barn-like, mosquito-and-rattlesnake-infested Colt Stadium, was able still to eke out a 41-40 winning record in '64 - but in the brand-spanking new Astrodome the '65 team ended up slipping to a 36-45 home record. That could be attributed to the fact that for most of the year they had to play in "green-painted dirt and dead grass", though away teams would have suffered the same conditions.
Maybe the new changes will end up assisting the Marlins standings-wise, but as the past shows, that's not a given.

The Miami Marlins, Version Three
Tonight Mr. Loria proclaimed the Florida Marlins are now the Miami Marlins, and introduced to the world the logos and designs that were basically the ones floating all over the web for the past couple of weeks.
One unique feature of the new grey uni was demonstrated by Boni. As he raised his arms up in celebration, the first 'I' in the word MIAMI that was stenciled across his jersey slipped inside itself, revealing the word MAMI, which may at least delight some of our Latin fans (among others).
Pitbull ended the proceedings with a performance (I thought pitbulls were illegal in Miami).

Latest interesting Marlins news, besides the rumors, seems to consist of chances to get an early snuggle-up to the new still-unnamed stadium. The goofy, almost-annual Herald Hunt is a free event that will take place on the stadium grounds just two days after the big name-change. Significantly more expensive than free will be 'Diamond Dishes' on Feb. 25, when Jeffrey's latest wife will be hosting food tastings inside the stadium.

Last Normal Game at Sun Life
With all the festivities planned, tomorrow's game will seem like an afterthought.
Of course with all the turbulent news bursting forth around the Marlins the last few days, the last couple of games have also been taking a back seat. Today's news is more of the same - along with the Adventures of Ozzie we now find out that Leo-Juan may beat the rap after all, that Frank McCourt is trying to drag Loria into the Dodgers bankruptcy, and that the Marlins don't even own the website miamimarlins.com.
But usually that's the case with the Marlins anyway - unbelievable stories paired up with Florida summers and consistently empty stadium. But that, sad to say, will be no more soon. Tonight's probably your last chance to enjoy the spaciousness, in the way a Florida Marlins game traditionally should really be enjoyed, with packs of sweaty people scattered here and there all over the stands, aimlessly staring at each other, wondering why there are so many other fans of other teams making all that noise, and, when nothing else is happening, checking out the game every now and then.
Go ahead. The box office is open up to the 5th inning. You know you're going to miss it.
For those not within a hour's flight, the pitchers tonight are Javier Vazquez and John Lannan.

Boo-Hoo
The assertion that there will be few tears shed as 'the Florida Marlins at Sun Life Stadium' leap off the diving board of history this week seems a little premature.
Already the skies have been crying most of the day. Maybe Mama Nature will allow a game tonight, maybe not.
There's a sense of loss, as McKeon stares at the crumbling clubhouse, as the front office boys begin to interview for his replacements.
And the talk of getting rid of Nolasco is building.
And the mini-crime wave known as Juan Carlos Oviedo has, nevertheless, positive hopes for the future.
The Brewers swept Florida for the season yesterday in Miller Park, giving the Marlins a losing road record for the year, and sealing up the cellar of the NL East for the Fish.
The not-so-perennial-anymore cellar-dwellers the Nationals are here to finish up 2011, fighting for 3rd place.
Scarily, the Nats are on an 8-game road win streak while the Fish have a .400 record at crumbly, drippy Joe-No-Mo Stadium.
Scary Nats rookie Tommy Milone is scheduled to start tonight, as Anibal Sanchez starts for Florida.
UPDATE: Jack will retire again after Wednesday.

Anibal's one-hitter last night creates a belief in the sweep in the series and the year for the Fish against the Bucs.
The 2011 Fish are 4-7 in Sunday away games (including a 'home' loss in Seattle), and lost their last one after winning the previous 3 in a row. The Pirates are 3-8 in Sunday home games this year and have lost their last 2.
Two recently hot pitchers, Javier Vazquez and James McDonald, fling this afternoon. Interestingly, considering today's 10th anniversary and the ceremonies conducted earlier, it's been noted that Javy is the only projected starter in today's games with a 9-11 record.

In the last two years Florida has a 10-2 record against Pittsburgh. The 2011 Pirates are 7-4 in Saturday home games though they have lost 3 of their last 4. This year's Marlins are 6-4 in Saturday away games though they lost their last 2 and one of those wins was a 'home' game in Seattle.

At the same time, one of the shortest-service Marlins is planned to be part of the whoopee at the Final Game festivities.
But first, it's Pittsburgh. The Marlins, with 20 games left in the year, are 3 losses away from a losing season. The Pirates' record is 2.5 games better than the Marlins. Both Pittsburgh and Florida have won 4 of their last 10 games. The Pirates won their last game, but they've won only one of their last eight games after a win, while the Fish have won two of their last eleven road games.

Wetness Wednesday
The trick with starting a game at 5 PM in Miami is hoping the daily thunderstorm deluge subsides a little earlier than usual.

Double the Doubling
The Fish are now scheduled to play a double-header on Saturday to avoid the destructive fury of Irene as it hits New York on Sunday, where the Marlins are supposed to play another double-header with the Mets on Monday. (Triple-header, anybody?)

Oh Boy - Another Game Against The Padres
San Diego can slip ahead of the Fish in the Wild Card standings with a win tonight. Here's a slight bit of optimism - the Marlins are 6-3 this year in Saturday away games (although they lost their last one in Atlanta). More good news - Omar Infante's been activated (bye bye Ozzie). It's Hensley and Harang on the hill.

Getting Worser?
The Marlins with 37 games left in the season are 10 games under .500, and even Trader Jack now has a losing record. With Stanton suffering from toe-main, the Fish are putting out tonight what some are calling the worst lineup in baseball. Volstad and LeBlanc are the pitchers.

Got a Post Done Before Game Time
The Fish start a 4-gamer tonight, their last 4-gamer of the year now that the upcoming Mets series at the Citi will now be a 5-gamer. It's the Marlins' last West Coast series, and last series against a NL West team, this year. Luckily, enviroment-wise, they get to do it in San Diego. But oh-oh, the Marlins have lost 9 of their last 12 against the Padres. Florida has lost 11 of their last 13, but won 13 of their last 18 road games.

Giants Arrive, War Of the Jinxes Possible?
Ever since the Giants series in S.F. the Marlins have been aimed straight towards the bottom of the standings. Combined with that is the Horror of playing in Sun Life Masoleum, where the last time the Marlins won a game the stock market was still a viable investment and Jerry Lewis was still on the Telethon. Maybe the Giants' series being played at the house Robbie built starting tonight may cause a cosmic collision of calamities that would cancel each of these black clouds out. Just seeing Cody again would be a sky-brightener.

Hanley's still not in the line-up today to help the Marlins stop the sweep. Although this guy thinks they may still do it. Besides, it's Gaby's mom's birthday so there's some extra incentive.

This Date in History
It's interesting to note that on the exact same spot where the new 38,000-seat Marlins ballpark is being hurried to completion, a baseball game was played 55 years ago that was viewed by a crowd so large that the new stadium probably would not have been able to contain it.

The Yadi-less Cardinals start a four-gamer tonight in Miami Gardens, where the rain has let up for now. Fearless prediction: There will be fewer spectators for tonight's game than for last night's exhibition 'futbol' match at the same venue.

Rainout Edition
The Fish and Mets rain out tonight. Time for make-up day bingo. This guy thinks they'll probably play a 5-game series at the end of the month. My choice would be September 8, a travel day for both teams coming from Miami where they will just finish a 3-game series here (on the 9th the Mets stay at home to play the Cubs while the Fish travel just down the street to Pittsburgh).
Not to mention the Marlins now have to come back to start a home series against the Cards with the threat of a tropical storm this weekend. (Damn, I mentioned it.)
