The Yadi-less Cardinals start a four-gamer tonight in Miami Gardens, where the rain has let up for now. Fearless prediction: There will be fewer spectators for tonight's game than for last night's exhibition 'futbol' match at the same venue.

Rainout Edition

The Fish and Mets rain out tonight. Time for make-up day bingo. This guy thinks they'll probably play a 5-game series at the end of the month. My choice would be September 8, a travel day for both teams coming from Miami where they will just finish a 3-game series here (on the 9th the Mets stay at home to play the Cubs while the Fish travel just down the street to Pittsburgh).

Not to mention the Marlins now have to come back to start a home series against the Cards with the threat of a tropical storm this weekend. (Damn, I mentioned it.)

(FIXED SOME THINGS) Now that the 100-game mark has passed, I'm looking at Baseball Reference 2011 NL stats to see in which categories the Fish stand out.

According to them, the Marlins are middle-of-the-pack in many of their team pitching and batting stats. Here are some of the Marlins team stats that are closer to being either best or worst - the Marlins are...

...5th worst in the NL in team batting average (.245; the Padres are last at .233, the Cards are first at .268)

...4th in stealing the fewest bases (57; Cubs have fewest with 35, most is San Diego with 106).

To prove once and for all that the Marlins are truly America's team,...after tonight no other ballclub will have played its home games from one end of the country (Puerto Rico), through its middle (US Celluar in Chicago in 2004), and all the way to the other end (well, maybe Hawaii and the Aleutians had other engagements, and besides, who knows what day it is in American Samoa - but at least they made it out to Seattle).

Today's news has blather over whether the Marlins should or shouldn't trade Hanley, and about the goofy things Jack says/does.

It's the last game of the nightmarish-21-straight-game stretch. After last night's win, the Fish amazingly could win a series tonight. Brian Sanches and the entire bullpen goes against Joel Pineiro this evening.

Handling Hanley

LoMo reportedly gets into Hanley's face for missing a meeting that everyone else attended. Jack says that's not why Hanley was benched yesterday.

McKeon, who is just three degress of seperation from the beginnings of the National League, has been attracting news reports pointing out how 'experienced' he actually is. After surprisingly setting Hanley down last night, Jack surprisingly has Hanley hitting cleanup tonight for the first time in his career. Mike Stanton returns and is hitting sixth.

Fish had another one-run loss last night. That's two one-run losses in a row, which the way things are going is almost encouraging. The Marlins are headed for a club record in losses-in-a-row if a turnaround doesn't happen tonight. Javier Vazquez and Ervin Santana pitch.

At least yesterday's game brought the Marlins back to losing by only one run, which they had done only once since June 11.

Knowing that Jack goes to Mass every morning it seems appropriate that the Angels will be in town to start his 2nd tour of duty as Fish leader. Much hay is made over McKeon benching Hanley tonight. Brad Hand was sent down, too. Anibal Sanchez and the Angels' Jered Weaver start.

It seems a muted congratulations are in order. The Marlins have joined the ranks of many of the storied fabled MLB franchises of history like the Cubs and Red Sox, as they now apparently have their own curse.

Some commentators have been seeing the Marlins' dive in fortunes as metaphysical payback for Scott Cousins slamming into Buster Posey, as if the results of that collision were somehow nefariously planned out in advance.

They point out the Fish are now 3-20 since that Giants series, while SanFran is still in first in the NL West without Posey or Freddy Sanchez - true enough.

Personally, though, I think it was those In-N-Out burgers - it takes a great while to get the effects of those babies out of the system.

The curse idea may have some merit, though. Practicioners of the many esoteric religions that we have here in South Florida should be retained to help rid the ballclub of whatever boogeyman is hovering over them, be it Buster or burger.

The Fish, 6 games under .500, continue to soldier on. Tonight Ricky Nolasco and Alex Cobb do battle.

Before that, though, the Rays' wives play the Marlins' wives in a 5-inning softball game. Let's hope the Fish can pick up a few pointers, or players.

Saturday With the Rays

It's an earlier 4:10 start for tonight's Super Saturday game, probably to make sure the Beach Boys don't play past their bedtime (it's been 45 years since Pet Sounds!) There'll be no Brian Wilson, but John Stamos will be reportedly performing with them.

As far as baseball is concerned, the 'perfectionist' Javier Vazquez is fated to start for the Fish. The Rays will put up David Price.

Two-Fer Tonight

South Florida's war against Chicago is fought on two fronts tonight - Game 2 of the Heat-Bulls series in Chicago (on 790 AM in Miami), and the heroic struggle of the Fish against the Cubs (shuffled off again to 1080 AM). Cubs fans, as usual, are obsessively moaning about the past. Starting for them tonight will be Former Fish Ryan Dempster, while Current Fish Ricky Nolasco starts for the Marlins.

Sweep the Citi?

With Hanley now possibly getting batting tips from the Hopper, and insane man-babies roaming Citi Field, the Marlins attempt a mini-sweep of the Mets tonight. Ricky Nolasco and last-night's-Mets-almost-hero Jon Niese start. Josh seems okay.

SORTA: Game postponed till July 18 - Fish will fly in from Chicago for one game and then fly home, while the Mets just lose a day off in the middle of two home series.

May Mini-Series Week

This week showcases the scheduling monstrosities that were unthinkable before the guiding hand of Selig - two 2-game series in a row, and then a weekend of interleague play. Of the five NL East teams only the Mets do not have to travel to get from one two-game series to the other (and even their interleague weekend is just across town). That may give a little relief to a team who's probably wondering how they can pay David Wright's medical bills while trying to survive their heritage of financial insanity, having to cough up $1.2 mil yearly to Bobby Bo for the next quarter-century being one example.

The Mets, though, have won 7 of their last 10, and 14 of their last 22. The weather may not be helpful to the Mets this coming week however. Neither will Josh Johnson, starting tonight as is the Mets' Mike Pelfrey. Hanley will be batting second.

Woof Without a Roof

The Nats and Marlins start what's predicted to be a rainy weekend with a game at 1:05 today. Tillman, the "World's Fastest Skateboarding Bulldog", is scheduled to lead the parade for the first of three 'Pups in the Park' this season at Nats Park. On the diamond, Livan will push aside his alledged ties with a drug trafficker and concentrate on starting today for the Nats, while undistracted Anibal starts for the Fish. Cora replaces Desmond in the Nats' lineup.

Back From File Corruption Hell

Now that Blogger is back to where it was, here's some news: Cishek and Petersen get sent down, and LoMo and Javier return, the Marlins are proud of their accomplishments in Haiti, John Baker details the lead-up to his Tommy John, and Cogz talks with his boyhood idol.
