Sweep By The Bay?

While the discussion begins over whether rule changes should be made over what happened to Buster Posey last night, baseball continues to be played today, hopefully retribution-free.

It's the Marlins' last game in SanFran this year- it would've been fun if they were there on June 4 for Cody Ross Bobblehead Day. Anibal and Ryan Vogelsong start today.

Saturday With the Rays

It's an earlier 4:10 start for tonight's Super Saturday game, probably to make sure the Beach Boys don't play past their bedtime (it's been 45 years since Pet Sounds!) There'll be no Brian Wilson, but John Stamos will be reportedly performing with them.

As far as baseball is concerned, the 'perfectionist' Javier Vazquez is fated to start for the Fish. The Rays will put up David Price.

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

Ow!

Time for Javier to step it up a few (hundred) notches, as Josh was put on the DL today for shoulder inflammation - Jay Buente was called up to start Sunday.

Two-Fer Tonight

South Florida's war against Chicago is fought on two fronts tonight - Game 2 of the Heat-Bulls series in Chicago (on 790 AM in Miami), and the heroic struggle of the Fish against the Cubs (shuffled off again to 1080 AM). Cubs fans, as usual, are obsessively moaning about the past. Starting for them tonight will be Former Fish Ryan Dempster, while Current Fish Ricky Nolasco starts for the Marlins.

Sweep the Citi?

With Hanley now possibly getting batting tips from the Hopper, and insane man-babies roaming Citi Field, the Marlins attempt a mini-sweep of the Mets tonight. Ricky Nolasco and last-night's-Mets-almost-hero Jon Niese start. Josh seems okay.

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

SORTA: Game postponed till July 18 - Fish will fly in from Chicago for one game and then fly home, while the Mets just lose a day off in the middle of two home series.

May Mini-Series Week

This week showcases the scheduling monstrosities that were unthinkable before the guiding hand of Selig - two 2-game series in a row, and then a weekend of interleague play. Of the five NL East teams only the Mets do not have to travel to get from one two-game series to the other (and even their interleague weekend is just across town). That may give a little relief to a team who's probably wondering how they can pay David Wright's medical bills while trying to survive their heritage of financial insanity, having to cough up $1.2 mil yearly to Bobby Bo for the next quarter-century being one example.

The Mets, though, have won 7 of their last 10, and 14 of their last 22. The weather may not be helpful to the Mets this coming week however. Neither will Josh Johnson, starting tonight as is the Mets' Mike Pelfrey. Hanley will be batting second.

Woof Without a Roof

The Nats and Marlins start what's predicted to be a rainy weekend with a game at 1:05 today. Tillman, the "World's Fastest Skateboarding Bulldog", is scheduled to lead the parade for the first of three 'Pups in the Park' this season at Nats Park. On the diamond, Livan will push aside his alledged ties with a drug trafficker and concentrate on starting today for the Nats, while undistracted Anibal starts for the Fish. Cora replaces Desmond in the Nats' lineup.

Phillies For Three

First, though...Congrats to Gaby!

Blanton and Vazquez started already. Once again that other team in town has knocked the Marlins off their Miami radio home and onto 1080 AM.

De-sweep Mode

Many activities at the ballpark this Mother's Day. Kids get free Mike Stanton t-shirts, along with a home-run exhibition pre-game and a faith forum with Chris Coghlan post-game.

But the basic question remains, 'Can The Fish get out of their 3-game funk?'

Anibal against Livan today. I guess John Buck's got a replacement cup.

The View From the Top

The Marlins are alone in first place in the NL East for the first time in almost 2 years. And today, with a stadium overrun with trucked-in children on CBS4 Weather Day (and a hot one it is, too), the Fish will try to sweep the Dodgers out of town. Anibal will try to improve on his last outing, with Billingsley pitching for L.A.

Day-After-Day-Off News

First, for those keeping score, here were the scores from yesterday...

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

Samson wants more than just money if you want your company's name on the new stadium. In other stadium news, the site's steel workers are now back on the unemployment line, the (hopefully hurricane-proof) canopy has arrived to be stretched over the roof, close to a third of the seats are already installed, and a year-round restaurant with a "sports theme" (surprise!) is being searched for - all to get ready for the building's first event, which will probably be a college baseball game.

The stadium's upcoming completion leaves Mike Stanton just this season to break Gallaraga's JoeRobbie-ProPlayer-Dolphin-LandShark-Dolphins-SunLife homer record. Mike's slow start, though, has him hitting sixth tonight.

Juan C. Rodriguez had a chat session today.

The Pirates, who are having their best season-beginning road record since 2002, have come to town. Paul Maholm start for the Bucs. Josh Johnson, who has another career ready when he leaves baseball, starts tonight for the Fish.

This game ain't on TV, so get the Herald's Two-For-Tuesday coupon and go.

Sun-day

A sunny, breezy day is expected in Philly. The go-away game will feature last night's duo, Cole and Anibal.

OOF: Phils win - Marlins go 5-3 on road trip.

Saturday, April 16, 2011

Saturday Showerday?

If there's a game today, the starters would be Cole Hamels and Anibal Sanchez.

(Yahoo)(ESPN)(CBSSports)(MLB)(FOX)(CNNSI)

RAIN-OUT: The Fish and Phils will make up today's washed-out game in a split-doubleheader on June 15, which will be the 13th game in a now-21-game stretch unbroken by a day off, the longest such stretch for the Marlins this year. (Philadelphia has a day off scheduled on June 13.)

Chilly in Philly

Craig reports on the shift of three Marlins games to another spot on the Miami radio dial. Since this move is because of the Heat's first-round playoff games, and since these first three moves only cover Games 1 through 4 of the first round of the playoffs, and since the Heat have a good chance to go all the way to the championship round, expect a lot more schedule shifting of Marlins radio games in Miami. I wondered last November, when the Heat moved to the Marlins flagship station, whether the Fish would be awarded the short end of the stick, so to speak. I guess we won't find out until the Marlins make the playoffs and start to interfere with Heat regular-season games.

The Marlins take their 4-2 road record to Philadelphia tonight on Jackie Robinson Day in the majors.

The weather's not looking good for tomorrow's game, and tonight should be the first really cold evening the Marlins have played in this year.

It's Javier against Roy Oswalt tonight.

Game Two In Atlanta

The Maniac gives his collection of interesting 'Fish Bites' found this past week. To those I would suggest a new Marlins blog, called "Fish Fry". And also, for an inside look at one of the most fake baseball minds ever, check out the Twitter rumblings of FakeSamson.

Considering how sparse and spread out last night's hits were, Edwin has decided to fiddle with tonight's lineup. The AJC's David O'Brian noticed how small and sparse (and 'Marlins'-like) last night's crowd was, and how Chipper's on the verge of a milestone.

Tonight Josh Johnson and Tim Hudson pitch.

Marching Through Georgia

Probably less historic than tonight's 150th anniversary of the start of the War Between The States would be the 3-game series the Marlins begin this evening in Atlanta.

This year the Fish arrive at Turner Field much earlier than last season (the 2010 Marlins didn't play their first game in Atlanta until July 2). Concerning first games at Turner, the Marlins lost last year after winning there three years in a row. The Braves are off to a somewhat slow start, which shouldn't bother them at all.

Fredi, Danny and Omar get to re-mesh with their old teammates. Chris Volstad and Tommy Hanson start. Hanley's back in the line-up tonight.

On The Road, On The Web

Edwin's website/blog has been discovered! (This link should lead to the Google English translation.)

The Fish play their first road game of the year tonight in Houston. The Marlins are 5-13 in first road games through their history, although they have won 3 of their last 4. They lost in 2006, the only other year that they had their first road game in Houston.

More Bloggage

It's the time of year for new blogs about, or around, or slightly mentioning, the Marlins.

First, a hat tip to Craig for finding a Zephyrs blog, called Catching Z's.

Another hat tip to Marlins Die-hards for linking to the often-times outrageous Strip Club With Stanton. The coverage of FanFest is in itself worth the price of admission.

And now two more from the MLBlogs domain - there's the recently reignited Never A Flamingo, Always A Marlin, and then a blog with only one post so far called Fish Sticks.

MORE: I've added the Florida Marlins Team Fan Blog to my roll. Yeah, it has that automated-advertising look to it, but some of its randomized-text postings makes more sense than the things I write.

New News

Michael Jong wonders how effective Perry Hill's gimmicks actually are in improving defense, while Clark Spencer just hopes our outfielders won't run into each other.

But there's no need to worry as Bart Gadbury says the Marlins will win the World Series this year anyway.

Vacation From Sun Life

The Marlins get to practice being home team at a retractable-roofed stadium this year.

Because the band U2 needs at least 4 days to prepare for their June 29 concert across the street from the northernmost WalMart in Miami-Dade County, the Fish will begin a West Coast road trip early and pretend to be the NL hosts of an interleague series against the Seattle Mariners in Safeco Field on June 24-26.

There was precedence for this last year, so the Marlins aren't being uniquely singled out.

Samson calls playing in Seattle "the best and only solution" (but if it's the 'best' solution, it couldn't have been the only one).

Google Maps says it'll take Billy the Marlin 2 days and 6 hours to go from Miami to Seattle by car (geez, it takes me 2 days to just get out of Florida).
